Sayers Common
The Challenge:
Cognition Land and Water Limited was commissioned by Elivia Homes to undertake remediation and ground improvement at a disused former brick field land at Furze Field, Reeds Lane, Sayers Common. A residential development is proposed at the site comprising thirty-six residential dwellings with private gardens, associated access roads, landscaped areas, pedestrian access, and a pumping station in the north of the site. Cognition’s scope of works included:
- Obtaining all required licenses, permit and consents including CDM requirements, Materials Management Plan under DoWCoP, Mobile Plant Permit deployment, Remediation Implementation Plan, discharge consent and Verification Report upon completion of the works
- Site clearance, fly tipping and vegetation removal
- Groundwater control and environmental monitoring throughout the works
- Excavation, processing, remediation and treatment of made ground at the site to make it suitable for reuse onsite whenever possible and removal from site where onsite remediation was not possible
The Approach
From the outset, Cognition differentiated ourselves by redesigning the approach to remediation to deliver significant improvements in cost and programme over the original design, proactive regulator negotiations to allow reuse of materials onsite (>95%) and early contractor involvement to help move the project forward.
Over 13,000m3 excavation and earthworks was carried out with the majority of material reused on site and stabilised to achieve the specified 15% CBR for development platform.
The Outcome
The works were completed on time and to budget with client Elivia Homes fully satisfied with the completed works and were extremely complimentary about Cognition’s performance throughout. Specifically, they commented on the high levels of communication throughout the works, the quality of final product and the level of professionalism demonstrated by Cognition.
