In 2020, Cognition teamed up with Climate Care to offset our total annual emissions and becoming Carbon Neutral for the first time. In the same year, the company committed to stay proactive, adopting and developing more sustainable remediation methodologies, selection of materials and energy sources we use, reducing the need for offset element of our emissions. Our long-term goal is to continue improving efficiency and minimise emissions from our routine site and office operations across the board.

Sandhill Homes Limited appointed Cognition to carry out remediation works on a former industrial site located in Herefordshire.

Planning was obtained to develop the site into residential use, with gardens and landscaped areas.

Previous ground investigations identified elevated heavy metal, TPH and PAH concentrations, with the presence of loose Chrysotile fibres within the shallow, near surface made ground present across the site, (within the top 0.5m).

Cognition compiled a remediation strategy and implementation plan, which was subsequently approved prior to remediation works being undertaken.

The remediation works comprised:

Intact asbestos sheeting removal: asbestos sheeting (one piece) was carefully handpicked by asbestos trained operatives under non-notifiable, non-licenced works.

Removing relic structures, hardstanding and shallow concrete slabs and sub-bases, relating to past developments. Materials were then processed, segregated and stockpiled for off-site disposal or recycling were possible.

Excavating all made ground to natural ground level (to approximately 1.10m bgl) and removing from site under full duty of care.

TPH impacted materials were targeted and excavated separately. The excavated materials were placed within a designated skip for off-site disposal, under full duty of care. Validation of the TPH impacted areas was undertaken by Cognition, to ensure that all impacted materials were successfully removed from the site.

Some made ground soils were re-used within the stabilisation of the road area.

Once all made ground was removed and the site reduced to the required finishing levels, validation testing was carried out to ensure that the remaining soils located within the gardens met the required remediation and re-use criteria for use within residential gardens with plant uptake.
