Homes England Estate Management Team Visit Cognition Compton Project

26 April 2024

Cognition Land and Water is carrying out enabling works, demolition, remediation and earthworks at the Former Pirbright Institute in Compton, Berkshire on behalf of Homes England.

Works are progressing well with ecological clearance and translocation complete, all of the 62 buildings decommissioned and certified asbestos-free, over 50 of the buildings demolished, and remediation complete or underway in many of the identified contamination locations.

This was a great opportunity for the Homes England Estates Management Team to pay us a visit to learn about the challenges of a complex enabling works project and hear from Cognition and our specialist sub-contractors on the solutions to the many issues facing the team.  Following a briefing on the project background by Howard Bassant (Homes England Estates Manager), Cognition’s Technical Director, Andy O’Dea, outlined the works being carried out by Cognition and our progress to date.  This was supplemented by a fascinating presentation from Glenn Hardcastle, James Cairns and Craig Morrissey of Aurora Health Physics, our expert radiological advisors, on the nature of radiological contamination at the site and the measures being adopted to ensure it is removed safely and effectively.  Mention was also made of the work of our specialist biological contamination advisors, Wilton Bio.  This was then followed by a site tour in the Cognition minibus by the group to see the works in action (school field trip was mentioned more than once!) and a Q&A session over lunch.

Thank you to those who contributed to the success of the visit; a job truly well done. We have had feedback from the Homes England Estates Management Team. They wanted to thank you all and express how well received the day was amongst attendees.

We look forward to working closely with Homes England through to completion of our works at Compton later this year and on their other interesting and challenging projects.  Thanks especially go to our 16 visitors from Homes England, who travelled from all parts of the UK to be with us - safe travels home.
