The presentation ceremony for The International Green Apple Environment Awards is taking place today, but before we tell you all about the event, there is one more of Cognition Land and Water’s award-winning projects we want to share with you.
Completed in just 13 weeks, the project Cognition undertook, on behalf of City of London Corporation, in collaboration with Lambert Smith Hampton, to infill a 19.1 km redundant gas pipeline to Barking Power Station, has won an International Green Apple Environment Award for its commitment to environmental stewardship.
Cognition Land and Water proposed a low carbon grout for the pipeline infill material, saving considerable embedded carbon against the works information by incorporating secondary byproducts. The change in material composition reduced embedded carbon by 71%, saving 3,219t CO2e. The alternative material also reduced carbon within the transportation of the material. The change in delivery method reduced vehicle movements by 60%, saving a further 34t CO2e.
Cognition undertook negotiations with 36 separate landowners and 3 local authorities, contributing to a completion on programme. The Cognition methodology accommodated sensitive, seasonal constraints and treated property and operations with care and respect, creating strong trusting relationships with landowners.
The work has satisfied the requirements for abandonment under Pipeline Safety Regulations 1996 and removed a legacy risk from affected landowners.
We are so proud of the work we completed here; congratulations to the Cognition team that worked on Barking as your hard work brought us this win!
