Cognition was contracted to carry out remediation and earth works at the Key Site in Godalming, Surrey. The site in central Godalming was occupied by the police station as well as a number of smaller industrial units. Between 1870 and 1970 a large gas works operated on the site which resulted in the contamination of soil and groundwater. The site is to be redeveloped for housing with Cognition carrying out treatment of soil groundwater. A number of techniques will be employed to deal with the contamination including in situ chemical oxidation, stabilisation and groundwater pumping and treatment. Given the sensitive location of site works are adhering to a strict environmental monitoring plan and it is anticipated that odour and dust suppression will be required around the boundary of the site.
