Cognition’s Meticulous Ecological Mitigation Works Yield Great Results at Former Laboratory Demolition Project

27 March 2024

Since May 2023, Cognition has been decommissioning, demolishing and remediating the former Pirbright Institute for Animal Health in Compton, West Berkshire on behalf of our client, Homes England.

The site features a complex mix of laboratory and office buildings combined with radiological, biological and conventional contamination, along with significant ecological challenges.  Apart from nesting birds and reptiles, the site is under a Natural England’s bat licence, which includes all buildings and structures as confirmed or potential roosts.

Cognition has been working closely with our specialist ecological supplier, Ecology by Design, to mitigate and sign-off each building ahead of demolition.  Two full-size bat barns and 27 bat boxes have been constructed and strategically placed across the site to mitigate the loss of roosting space.  This meticulous and methodical work has culminated in some excellent results with several bats safely rehoused and all associated buildings safely demolished.

If you would like further information on our work around ecological mitigation, please contact us at enquiries@cognitionltd.com.
