Large-scale Riverside Remediation in Godalming.
The site has a long history of industrial use and housed a coal yard and depot and a factory engaged in the production of barrage balloons, parachutes and other safety equipment during and after WW2 through the 20th century. Over the decades the site has also been the subject of landfilling with pockets of gas works waste and general rubbish. It had been partially remediated in the 1990s to bring up to a standard acceptable for housing industrial and commercial units however to change to domestic usage further remediation work was required.
Cognition was tasked with delineating the areas of contamination, excavating, segregating and treating the waste prior to disposal. The works also involved treating groundwater and removing Japanese knotweed infested soil. Cognition processed more than 30,000m3 of soil carrying out considerable earthworks and re-profiling to level the site prior to construction. All the works were carried out under Cognition's mobile plant permit with careful monitoring for dust, vibration and noise to minimise the impact on local residents.
